Not knowing what I’m looking at

Hi

I like recording insects mainly, but I don't always know what they are and certainly not the species name.  Is there anyway I can upload the picture of the insect without adding the genus or species?

Hi Sarah.

Hi Sarah.

No is the short answer, sorry! The main purpose of iRecord is to gather and verify biological records, and the identity of the organism is a key part of that. Verifiers look at their particular area of interest, so if you haven't put in an ID they just won't see your record.

If you want help with identifying the insects that you are finding then iSpot (https://www.ispotnature.org/) is a good community where you can put up photos and get IDs for them. If you prefer doing it via an app then iNaturalist is also popular (make sure you download the UK version so it doesn't suggest US species/names). Finally if you know what family your insects and use Facebook there are some very good groups there, e.g. for Hoverflies, Soldierflies, Bees & Wasps etc.

Thank you James that's really helpful, I'll use the iNaturalist app, which I haven't heard of before.
